RISING OBESITY: AN OBSERVATION

Waist sizes have increased by almost 5 cm. in 12 years, within the adult population of France (source: ObEpi - Roche 2009)
 

 

In 2009, 14.5 % of Frenchmen were obese (compared to 8.5 % in 1997)

31.9 % of Frenchmen were overweight (compared to 29.8% in 1997)


 

 

 

Obesity is a medical condition when BMI exceeds 30.

A normal BMI is considered to be between 18.5 and 25.

 

Average BMI was 25.3 kg/m² (BMI = Weight / Height²). On average, a Frenchman's waist measures 89.9 cm (compared to 85.2 cm  in 1997).

 

Abdominal obesity increases risks of disease. Visceral fat increases the risks of cardiovascular diseases and cancers.
It is a major factor in order to determine the existence of a metabolic syndrome.
